took a break from posting spotlights last week and now i am back with another awesome photographer for you to meet. leah (a.k.a. leah | salome_st_john) on flickr....

1.) what draws you to photography?
Need, I think. I found photography only very recently - started fooling around with my point and shoot about a year, year and a half ago. Then last summer I got a Polaroid Spectra System and a Pentax K1000 SE. It was the first time I'd ever used manual focus, the first time I loaded 35mm film, the first time with black and white, the first time I knew there was more to Polaroid than taking really bad shots of people using blinding flash. The first time for a lot of things. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. But it was like coming home.
There have been other things in my life that have brought me astounding joy and pleasure, like singing, dancing, writing, and making wonderful food, but nothing has ever felt as "right" as photography. The first time I looked through the lens of my Pentax, it was like seeing the outside world the way I used to only see it in my head. And the first time I looked through a medium format camera, everything fell into place. I was awestruck.
Photography, more than anything, allows me to express myself without needing anyone else. I can share it, but it can also be mine. And that's very powerful, especially for me.
I'm kind of an extroverted introvert. I'm very friendly and outgoing, but I need a lot of time to recharge. Photography is a perfect endeavor for someone like that. It gives me an opportunity to interact, but it also gives me an excuse to go off into my own universe on a second's notice. Or to walk around and be alone but still engage with the outside world when I need to.
Photography as well is also an opportunity to explore what it is I want to express. I'm still not sure what that is, but I'm figuring it out every day.
It gives me a sense of myself that nothing else does. It's the only thing I've ever pursued with such single-mindedness.
